No question is too intimate, you deserve to have as much information as possible.
Luna is currently financed by its investors. The amount of funding raised so far is about $1M. So there’s people betting their money on our success. I must also note that these people seem to understand that it’s a long game, but it’s also one well worth the wait if we handle things right.
I don’t think that “we don’t know yet” is what @wdanilo was trying to communicate. One thing that may have lead you to think that is his taking the occasion to brainstorm the ideas (which we are always very keen to do).
The 3 schemes described in his first response are all real plans and they are ordered by “how much of a moonshot is it?” or “how many things must go well for that scheme to become a thing?”. I’m also fairly confident, that succeeding in even the first scheme (i.e. support & services) is enough to have a stable organization supporting Luna – think about e.g. Lightbend, the company behind Scala & Akka. Of course this is not the dream for us, and no way to become a large player, but this option is there and it is able to sustain a small-to-medium-sized organization.
Now, is there a possibility that Luna will go down and in 2 years no one will even remember the name? Of course there is. This is a moonshot project and many things must go well in order for Luna to become a thing. One of these things is community support – no single language has ever succeeded without a large enough community. And for any community member joining us this is indeed an investment. Exactly how people have bet their money on us, you’re betting your time and effort and we promise to provide the best experience we can in return, but after all this is a decision that you need to make based on the risks and gains.
About Eve – I always had trouble imagining selling it to someone. It had a lot of nice ideas, with some clean UI, but I have never had this “OK, I need it in this particular project NOW” moment. Take this with a grain of salt of course – as a founder I’m naturally biased towards our own creation
